The Origins of Spanish.
Not a lot of people know this about the Spanish Language, but its
actually 2 Languages in one. One is Castilian which is rooted in Vulgar
Latin, and the other to the surprise of many people is actually Arabic.
More then 6000 words in the modern day Spanish Language came from or are rooted in the Arabic Language.
Some examples of these words are:
Hasta - (Until) which came from the Arabic word ‘Hatta’
Ojala - (I Hope) from Arabic “La sha 'Allah” or “In sha 'Allah” which means “In Gods Will”.
Aceite - (Oil) From Arabic “Az-zayta”
Alcalde - (Mayor) from Arabic “Al-qaaDii” which means “Judge”
Usted - (You) in Arabic is “Ustadh” which later meant the word “Doctor” or “Pro”
Azúcar - (Sugar) from Arabic “As-sukkar"
Almohada - (Pillow) from the Arabic word "Al-mikadda” which became “Almuhadda”.
Barrio - (Neighborhood) comes from the Arabic word for outer limits (referring to a city): “Barri”.
Naranja - (Orange, Fruit) which comes the Arabic word…..“Nāranja”
which in different Dialects can mean anything from the actual Orange
Fruit to Scents or Fragrance.
Taza - (Cup) or Arabic Tasa and the list goes on and on.
How is this? How the Hell did this happen? Well you have to remember
that a large chunk of Spain belonged to the Muslim Faith and Arabic was
the Dominant Language, and once they were kicked out in 1492, the Arabic
Language merged with the Northern Castilian Language and BOOM!
You have Spanish!
This might explain if you’re a Spanish Speaker why you might have
sometimes understood what someone speaking in Arabic was saying.
